The newly opened Kikino Metis Children & Family Services centre in Prince George offers a range of programs to support every age, said facilitator. Earl Lambert, who also works with Positive Living North, said the non-profit society located at 1560 Third Ave. delivers continuing services designed to meet the needs of both aboriginal and non-aboriginal children and families living in the region.
"We even have a grandmothers' program for the elders whose role is again being recognized."Their historical role was to share history, knowledge, culture and traditional practices with the young, but that practice was lost through the use of residential schools".
•Spirit of the Grandmothers support group is held Tuesdays from 10:00 am to noon with topics ranging from medicine wheel teachings to conflict resolution and understanding addictions.
•Warrior Caregivers is a 16-week fathers support program that deals with understanding of children's needs; effective communication, self-esteem and identity, and power and control, to name a few topics. It's open to all male caregivers of any race, color or creed.
•Circle of Life is a family preservation and healthy parenting program that deals with topics such as understanding violence, health and nutrition, life skills, courage to be heard, and goal setting.
•Elements of Insight and Beyond is a 10-week family education outreach program that focuses on understanding, coping and caring for children who have experiences past trauma, neglect and violence or abuse. It's on April 9 to June 11 from 5 to 7:30 pm at Hadih House, 2105 Pine St. For more information on any of these programs call Janice Helsoe at 563-1661
